Stand in the supplement aisle and the probiotic shelf gives you capsules, fine powders, chewable tablets, and liquids to drink. Most people scan the front of the box, see “10 billion” or “50 billion,” and check out. But two products can start with the same count and deliver very different numbers of live bacteria to the gut, because the format decides how many die on the way.

Probiotics are live organisms. Their effect comes down to how many make it through the stomach and duodenum without being killed. Choose by format instead of by headline number and you get two things: fewer grams of sugar you didn’t want, and more of the bacteria you paid for.

What the bacteria are up against

Stomach acid runs between pH 1 and 3. Food sits there for roughly two hours, and over that stretch the enzyme activity that helps bacteria tolerate acidity drops off. Then comes the duodenum and bile acid. Bile helps you digest fat, but to a bacterium it behaves like a detergent — it breaks down the cell membrane and damages DNA. The tablet also shatters against your teeth and meets the enzymes in saliva right away, so an uncoated chewable delivers less to the gut than a capsule does.

Liquid drops and fermented-milk formats are useful for newborns who can’t swallow anything — you can stir them into formula or baby food. But liquid is mostly water, so the bacteria never go dormant; they keep burning energy. Leave the bottle at room temperature for long and the culture makes its own acid and dies, or oxidative stress knocks the count down. Once you’ve picked a format, look at how the count is stated and how the product is stored. People mix up two numbers: the amount added during manufacturing, and the amount still alive at the end of the shelf life. Bacteria die off slowly with time, temperature, and humidity, so a responsible maker overfills so the needed number is still there when the product expires. The figure to find on the label is not the amount added — it’s the guaranteed CFU count within the shelf life, per daily serving.

Room-temperature capsules and powders rely on individual aluminum packets or an airtight container to keep out air and moisture. Refrigerated products need to sit between 2°C and 8°C right up until you take them, to slow the bacteria’s respiration and die-off. If you don’t have reliable fridge space at home or work, or you’re out of the house a lot, a well-sealed room-temperature enteric capsule holds its count better.

The short version: adults who can swallow pills should default to a sugar-free enteric capsule that skips the acid; kids and anyone who struggles to swallow should default to a freeze-dried powder with minimal added sugar.
